Where do I begin? From my humble Holga beginnings and all over the map,I'll start there.
A little over a year ago I was gifted with my first toy camera,a Holga 120 CFN.This model is actually the hi-fi model with a flash and color filters to boot. There is a low tech model that i have added to my plastic camera stuff wish list(see that list at the end of this article).
So what IS a Holga? I like my friend Mark Fisher's
description, paraphrased here:"The term "toy camera" refers to inexpensive plastic cameras such as the Holga.Such
tools are low in technology, and high in creative possibilities. They
are very much a tool for "seeing" without stressing about too many
dials,bells,whistles,and lens combinations." SOLD!
I then purchased a book called Plastic Cameras Toying with Creativity (Focal Press 2007) wonderfully, thoughtfully written by Michelle Bates and loaded with valuable information and an amazing array of images, plastic portfolios if you will,an eclectic feast for the eyes!In this book you will find an intro to the history of plastic cameras and why they are so doggone popular. There are film options, tips, tricks and operation basics for the Holga...you know, loading, unloading and how NOT to ruin your film! You will learn how to take your Holga out to play, loving its many quirks and the artful images that will come to pass as a result.Chapter 9 will show you how to fuss with your Holga...making very desirable modifications and sooooo much more than all of that can be gleaned from this must have 240 page treasure!!!!
This is Michelle Bates. She was in town this past weekend to host and judge the opening reception for the "Unrefined Light:Image-making with Plastic Cameras and Their Friends" exhibit that should be seen from now until May 9,2008 at The Foundry Art Centre here in St.Charles,Missouri.
While Michelle was here she taught a two day crash course that included a slide show of a wide range of toy camera photography & loads of how-to information. Then we took to the streets with our Holgas to shoot a roll of Kodak 400TX black and white neg film(on a perfectly gray, overcast day...thanks be to the Heavens for the great lighting!),and thanks to MB for sharing her luscious supply of filters and other goodies with the group!Ok,that was Saturday.
On Sunday we gathered at the local community college photo lab and proceeded to look at contact sheets and negatives that Mark and a couple of other film teachers in the group developed and put together the night before from our field trip on Saturday. We then chose a favorite image from our cs and headed for the darkroom to develop the negative. What an utterly satisfying experience this was!The entire weekend was magical...a plastic seed has been deeply planted and I can feel it taking root!
